Holistic Literacy in Grade one
Holistic Literacy provides a balance of whole-language and explicit phonics teaching, combined with phonological awareness games, time for reading and writing during child-directed inquiry, and literacy development through play. Viewing literacy holistically means that as a teacher, you are able to consider all of the tools available for literacy development and establish a plan to provide your students with access to as many of those tools as possible in an effort to help them feel successful and happy. It involves careful planning, differentiation, and flexibility.
The purpose of this website is to provide teachers with a possible framework for developing a holistic literacy program, and to provide teachers with links to some excellent educational resources to support them in their literacy teaching journey.
